Find a Web Server
Once you have build a webpage, you can test it by opening Internet
Explorer (or you browser of choice) and selecting the File/Open option from the
menu. Open your webpage as you would any other file, and check that it all works.
Once
you are happy with the page, you are ready to publish. Your website should
be sitting in a folder with images in their own folder, and the index.htm file
in the "route" directory.
Some Internet service providers
(ISP) provide free web hosting to its customers. Many do. If not, there
are a number of companies that will provide server space at no charge. If you
use free web hosting your site will probably display an advertising banner for
your hosts. These free hosting solutions are a great way to start, but they have
their limitations. There are a lot of very cheap options also available, and we
recommend buying some cheap server space from a company such as
PowWeb:
"All in
One" Web Hosting! - $7.77/month!
Interland:
$7.95 per month
The
most important aspect of your web host is the control panel. You should have
access to a good statistics program, e-mail management, and many hosts will provide
a set of development tools that will enable you to ad forums, message boards and
many other functions to your website easily. We recommend AFILLIATE.
When
you register for web hosting services, you will be sent instructions on how
to upload files to the web server. Make sure you save them somewhere safe, as
you will need them later.
